Graduate Profile

The Mechanical Engineering degree is geared to students entering the program during the 2016 admission process. Its curriculum is aimed at future engineers interested in designing products, machinery and equipment, manufacturing, heat engineering and mechatronics.

The integration of this knowledge and these skills will allow students to perform in a broad job market, and in particular, in mining, large engineering works, in the design and manufacturing of equipment, and the design and operation of industrial plants.

The Faculty of Engineering and Sciences offers seven different majors. The academic program developed by the Faculty has eleven specialized minors, and conducts workshops as well as applied integral academic training courses.

Our teaching model combines rigorous training in mathematics and science with applied workshops that tackle the latest challenges of modern engineering and which serve as a demonstration of how engineering is taught at the best universities in the world.

The first three semesters of academic training correspond to the Engineering Common Course of Study. Then, from the fourth to the eighth semester, students choose one of seven specialized minors offered by the Department. Depending on their interests, they can choose from any of the different minors available.


Master's Degree Specialization

Through these programs, students can specialize in the most dynamic areas of engineering and those with the greatest growth prospects, achieve a sound conceptual foundation and develop complementary skills that will enable them to perform both in business and in the public and academic sectors.

Master of Science in Industrial Engineering

The Master of Science in Industrial Engineering degree integrates knowledge from various engineering disciplines, as well as economics and management in order to promote the productivity of companies and institutions. Some areas of specialization include operations management, economic engineering, econometrics, advanced marketing and quantitative finance. See more information.

Master of Science in Bioengineering

Specializing in this area will allow students to address technological applications based on biological systems and living organisms that can be used in the development of new products and processes. The discipline uses methods of engineering and biology. Its topics of expertise include, among others, environmental remediation, biofuels, food production, bioleaching and increasing animal and plant productivity by means of genetic techniques.

Master of Science in Engineering in Energy and Environment

This program focuses on the study of the technologies involved in power production, consumption and transmission, as well as on the impact that energy use has on the environment. It delves into issues involving non-conventional renewable energy, energy efficiency, nuclear energy, energy and environmental planning and issues related to climate change.

Master of Science in Engineering in Information Technology

The program is focused mainly on the analysis and development of computer systems and information technology. Topics of specialization include signal transmission and processing, network design and management, high-demand database servers, and Internet services.

Master’s Degree in Financial Engineering

This is a pioneer program in the country that delves into the more quantitative aspects of finance, and these usually not covered by programs that have a more pronounced focus on theory and practice of general financial principles. However, well-managed uncertainty can be a source of significant opportunities, particularly through the use of financial products designed to protect businesses from market fluctuations, thereby allowing them to focus on their core value proposition in the market.

Master’s Degree in Technology Management and Entrepreneurship

A unique program in Chile that allows students to transform science and knowledge into businesses and promote their growth. The program is specially designed to support technology-based entrepreneurial ventures and provide management tools useful in the protection and commercialization of intellectual property both in established companies and startups. At the UAI students will find an ecosystem of technological innovation that will provide them with the opportunity to interact with academics and students who develop real-life cases of management, technological innovation and entrepreneurship in Chile. They will also meet and interact with those involved in UAI research and development centers, their respective entrepreneurial spaces and a wide network of companies with which collaborative projects are being carried out. 

Master’s Degree in Complex Systems Engineering

The Master’s degree in Complex Systems Engineering is a multidisciplinary program designed to train researchers who can formulate, analyze and solve engineering problems involving complex systems in which physical, human, biological and computational agents interact. The program represents the first year of the PhD in Complex Systems Engineering.

Master’s Degree in Management

The Master’s degree in Management Science is a highly-rigorous academic program whose purpose is to provide quantitative and management tools in order to address the complexities of the business world. This program allows students to develop four key areas of management: economics/finance, general management, marketing and operations. This program is taught in conjunction with the UAI Business School.

Degree Granting Options

In order to have the best engineering program in the country, the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences has created several alternatives to enable students to obtain their professional degrees.

Capstone Project

The student must develop a consulting project within a company or institution, and design solutions to problems, needs and opportunities regarding the same. The Capstone Project is developed in the context of two consecutive courses that are part of the fifth-year Civil Engineering curriculum: the Engineering and Business Workshop and the Engineering Project Workshop. Performance as part of a multidisciplinary team characterized by excellence is expected

Combining Fifth-Year Studies with a Joint UAI Master’s Degree

Once students obtain the Bachelor of Engineering Sciences degree, they can continue their studies by combining their fifth-year Engineering students with one of the Master’s degree programs offered the University. Through this mechanism, students have the option to take fifth-year courses and the Master’s degree either at the same time or sequentially, and thereby be exempt from two optional elective courses as well as from graduation seminars.

Eligible Master’s degree programs include:

Master’s Degree in Engineering Sciences (MCI) in its four specialties: Bioengineering, Energy and Environment, Industrial and Information Technology.

  • Master’s Degree in Economics and Public Policy

Combining Fifth-Year Studies with an International Master’s Degree

Once students obtain the Bachelor’s degree of Engineering Sciences, they can continue their studies by combining their fifth-year coursework with an international Master’s degree program in one of the universities with which the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences has active exchange agreements. Once admitted to the international Master’s degree of interest, the student must take at least one semester of the fifth-year coursework with the Department and may be exempt from the second semester as long as he/she successfully completes the entirety of the international Master’s degree and is awarded the degree.

Internship in Chile and Abroad

As part of their fifth-year studies, the student may do an extended internship in a company that has an agreement with the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences, and may be exempt from graduation workshops and two elective courses, as well as the professional internship. The internship can be carried out either full-time (one semester) or part-time (two semesters).

The student must engage with with company’s operations, and thereby gain a true understanding of the work experience.
